Born in Edo period, Yoshitoshi was a disciple of Kuniyoshi Utagawa. In 1870¡Çs he worked as a illustrator for newspapers. He is famous for Bijin-ga (women portraits), the 100 aspects of the moon, and historical heroes. In 1887, he illustrated cuts inside the novel ¡ÈUkigumo¡É written by Shimei Futabatei that is regarded to be Japan¡Çs first modern novel. Yoshitoshi designed not only traditional prints, but also some contemporaries at the time as well. |
