"The Cry of the Fox,"a hunter receives a surprise visit one night from his old uncle,
priest Hakuzosu. The priest expounds to his nephew on the virtues of foxes and tells him
how evil it is for men to kill them. The hunter is almost convinced. A few moments after
the priest leaves, the young man hears the call of a fox outside his hut. He realises that
the visitor was not his uncle at all, but a fox in disguise. On his way home, the priest
turns back into a fox and thus loses the power of human reasoning. He sees a trap, takes
the bait, and is captured.
The fox in this design is beginning to lose his human shape. His hands still clutch a rosary,
but his face has changed back to a fox's and a bushy tail lends an unnatural curve to the
priestly rear end.
