Hotei was the god of happiness and good gortune, one of the part-Buddhist, part-Daoist
Seven Lucky Gods in whose conpany he is often illustrated.
The print is titled "Moon of enlightenment." The sight of the moon suddenly appearing from
behind the clouds has served as a form of satori for Hotei, as it can for us.Hotei delighted
in everything: here he points in rapture at that wonderful phenomenon, the moon. Child-like,
he represents a joyful freedom from the conventions of the world.
