Hokusai became a disciple of Shunsho Katsukawa and studied painting under the
Kano school and later even the western technique of painting, too. The sphere of his
paintings, therefore, was so wide, free and bold because of his vigorous energy and
undaunted spirit. He really brandished painting brushes like a supermen.
His eccentric manner of living surprised the people of that time. For example,
he changed his residence more than 100 times in his life. He never showed any interest
in saving money or accumulating a fortune. He was content with honest poverty throughout
his life. There was movement in his paintings. All the beautiful women or figures in his
landscape pictures, showed people in action. It is said that his depiction of landscapes is
too exaggerated, but these are all based upon his well-devised plan, which no other painter
can match in technique. This free-style of paintiong really surprised ghe people of those days.
It is worth special mention that his woo-block prints gave a great influence to the field
of art in Europe. And they say that Hokusai's vivid expression in his prints influenced
European artists so much that their style of painting was completely changed.
