In the year 1185, the Heike Clan is annihilated by Yoshitsune of the Genjis at the sea-fight of Dan-no-Ura, the narrows at the westen extremity of the Inland Sea.
Instead of being commented for this brilliant victory, as fate will have it, Yoshitsune has to put himself to an exile in order to escape from a murderous attempt on the part of his jealous elder brother Toritomo.
Nexe year,Yoshitsune, with his right-hand man Benkei Musashibo and a few other all disguised as itinerant monks, finds himself at the Barrier of Ataka, province of Kaga.
Ere this, the barrier commandants all over Japan are oderd by Yoritomo to keep a shiarp lookout for his fugitive brother, and the captain of the guards here, Saemon Togashi, naturally susupects these men withnarrow eyes, Against Togashi's questions about their identity, Benkei replies that they are travelling to raise funds for the rehabilitation of the Todaiji Temple and begins to read out a fake Kanjin-Cho or donation scroll with assumed revence.
This satisfies Togashi but only temporarily. He still susupects that aristocratic looking person whom Benkei calls "onky a coolie". Reading Togashi's deep susuposely and mercilessly flogs his own master.By this time Togashi knows that the coolie is no less personage than Yoshitsune himself in disguise-the very fugitive they are looking for,but deeply impressed by Benkei's loyalty and quick wits, pretends that he is satisfied and lets them continue their Jouney towards the Province of Mutsu, the northern tip of Honshu.
This play is known as Kanjin-cho or "Donation Scroll " and is one of the most popular plays of all Kabuki dramas.
